Yesterday, Mojang hosted its latest bi-annual Minecraft Live event and showed off the next game drops coming to Minecraft‘s Bedrock Edition and Java Edition. The company not only gave players a closer look at The Copper Age drop, which is coming out on September 30, but it also revealed an entirely new drop called Mounts of Mayhem. This update, which will be released in Holiday 2025, is going to introduce some new mounts to Minecraft, just like its name suggests. One of the mounts that will be featured in this update is the zombie horse. These horses were originally introduced in Minecraft‘s 1.6 update, but they’ve been left unused by Mojang for several years. Now, however, they are finally going to spawn naturally in-game, and they’re occasionally going to be ridden by zombies at nighttime.

The Mounts of Mayhem update will also introduce another new mount called the nautilus. While nautilus shells have existed in Minecraft for quite some time, these nautiluses are going to be an actual mob that players can encounter underwater. Much like a horse or a pig, players will be able to tame a nautilus by feeding it its favorite food (in this case, the pufferfish) and ride it underwater by using a saddle. Even though it may not seem like it at first, the nautilus may actually be one of the most useful mounts in all of Minecraft, arguably even more so than the Happy Ghasts that Mojang introduced a few months ago.

The Mounts of Mayhem Update is Adding a New Mob Called the Nautilus

Whenever a player rides a nautilus in Minecraft, they will get a special status effect called Breath of the Nautilus. This effect allows them to breathe underwater indefinitely. Although it can’t directly replenish a player’s air supply, it will stop it from going down. This means that, as long as players ride a nautilus without having an empty oxygen bar, they can remain underwater for extended periods of time and not be exposed to the danger of drowning. Players can even ride the nautilus to the surface if they need to catch their breath again.

Players can equip their nautiluses with armor to protect them from underwater threats. This nautilus armor can be found in chests while exploring in the game.

Players Can Make Any Underwater Creation They Want While Riding a Nautilus in Survival Mode

Since the nautilus allows players to breathe underwater, this means that they can, in theory, build anything they want underwater in Survival Mode without any caveats. This is a pretty big deal because, even though players can avoid the threat of drowning by playing Minecraft in Creative Mode, there hasn’t really been any way to breathe underwater indefinitely in Survival Mode; up until now, that is.

There Are Some Ways to Breathe Underwater in Minecraft, But They're Not That Good

At the moment, there are only a few things that Minecraft players can do to extend the amount of time that they can stay underwater. They can, for example, drink some Potions of Water Breathing while swimming, in order to temporarily prevent their oxygen bar from depleting. Before diving into the sea, players can also equip a helmet with the Respiration enchantment, which allows them to breathe underwater for a few extra seconds. Those who build a Conduit underwater can avoid drowning, as well, thanks to the Conduit Power status effect. This effect, however, only works when standing near said Conduit.

The Nautilus is Great, But Players Should Watch Out for the Zombie Nautilus When Underwater

While it’s nice that there are some things that players can use in the game to stay underwater for a longer period of time than usual, none of them work indefinitely, and they are kind of a hassle to deal with. Now, though, thanks to the nautilus, players can stay underwater for as long as they want and build whatever they feel like while in Survival Mode. When the Mounts of Mayhem update is released, however, Minecraft fans will have to keep an eye out for a new type of mob known as the zombie nautilus while swimming underwater, since it, much like the zombie horses, can be ridden by a dangerous drowned.
